Who needs to join?

If you operate a utility in the state of Virginia, you are required by law to become a member of VA811. A utility can be a power company, a gas company, a telephone cooperative or any system that functions for the common good.

Working together with members, VA811 operates a public awareness campaign that helps promote safety and the elimination of utility service interruptions.

What are the benefits?

First and foremost, you keep your company in compliance with Virginia law.

The Virginia Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act also allows member utilities to recover damages to their utility lines that cannot be recovered if you are not members.

You proactively protect your utility and ensure that you receive notification of any excavation activity that could potentially damage your underground utility lines.

You also help spread the word about safe digging which means you proactively help protect citizens and help avoid power outages.
